Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
