Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such medications should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
